Our Corporate Social Responsibility - Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Inclusive Playground

Made possible by the Care & Share Movement, with SMRT as the primary donor, the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio inclusive playground was officially opened by Minister for Social and Family Development, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin on 22 August 2015.

The inclusive playground caters to children with disabilities, and has a wheelchair-friendly merry-go-round, a wheelchair swing as well as a slide that provides additional tactile stimulation. Close to thirty SMRT volunteers were present at the event to lend a helping hand to beneficiaries giving the new playground a go. Twenty-seven SMRT taxis also provided return transport to ferry the beneficiaries between their homes and Bishan Park.

“The inclusive playground is a very positive step towards integrating children with disabilities into the society," said Ms Helen Tay, Senior Manager at the Society for the Physically Disabled.

“We can actually see normal playground equipment and also special playground equipment, allowing normal kids and kids with special needs to actually mingle around and play around. So it’s actually quite an interesting programme,” said Ms Joelle Chew, SMRT Volunteer.

“This is part of SMRT’s vision of moving people, enhancing lives and we’re delighted to be able to support this inclusive playground in Singapore,” shared SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek.

Collaborations to Celebrate SG50

In celebrating Singapore’s 50 years, we are also supporting other organisations to commemorate Singapore achievements since independence.

1. #OneSongOneSg

As we celebrate our nation's 50th birthday, fellow Singaporeans can't help but sing their hearts out on our trains. Check out the video created by #OneSongOneSg here.

2. Local Champions, Global Leaders

‘Local Champions, Global Leaders’ is a national-level competition jointly organised by SPRING, EDB, and IE Singapore. This competition celebrates the stories of local industry champions and multinational corporations which have made significant contributions since Singapore’s independence. A total of 76 groups of 300 students from five local polytechnics and six universities participated.

The Famous Five team from NUS was assigned to SMRT. The team visited us to better understand our history, business and challenges. We enjoyed working closely with the Famous Five.

On 10 February 2015, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Manpower  and Co-Chair of the SG50 Economic and International Committee, graced the award ceremony where the Famous Five team emerged as Champions in the University Category.
