SMRT’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices was formalised in 2008 with the launch of a company-wide ‘SMRT is Green’ programme. The programme seeks to promote green practices among its business partners, customers and staff in the areas of energy, air, waste, water management and green resources.

Green Code of Conduct

Every SMRT employee is responsible for protecting the environment for the long term, in the areas of:

􀁴 Air Management

􀁴 Waste Management

􀁴 Water Management

􀁴 Green Resources

SMRT employees must consider the environmental impact of their work and address them in business decision-making.

Employees and business partners must demonstrate a commitment to comply with environmental legislation, regulations as well as the SMRT Environment Policy.

Employees and business partners must also adhere to the following underlying principles:

􀁴 Protect the environment at their worksites

􀁴 Show leadership and commitment towards assessing and managing environmental impact

􀁴 Minimise and mitigate damage to the environment

􀁴 Conserve natural resources

 

Partnerships

SMRT works very closely with our strategic partners, including the National Environment Agency (NEA), Public Utilities Board (PUB), various Community Development Council (CDC), non-governmental organisations, and schools to identify strong and sustainable community programmes that we can support. Some of our involvement and programmes include:

 Project: Eco-Shop, Singapore’s first comprehensive eco-certification programme for shop owners, with Singapore Environment Council (SEC).

 Woodlands MRT station is the first Eco-station in Singapore and was  awarded the Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark (Gold).

 Ang Mo Kio Station is the second MRT station to be awarded the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark (Gold) Award.

 NEA’s Clean and Green Singapore Launch, a nation-wide campaign aiming to inspire Singaporeans to adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

 Media space sponsorship to World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for their year-long campaign; and staff participation in WWF’s Earth Hour event.

 Launch of South West – SMRT Eco Fund and Go Green Seed Fund @ South East with South West CDC and South East CDC respectively, to support green projects initiated by the community.

 Collaborated with PUB to distribute water conservation decals to over 750 shops in our network during the Singapore World Water Day in March 2015. We also raised awareness among commuters for water conservation through public education posters in our stations.

 

Environmentally-friendly Vehicles

We continue to expand our ‘green’ fleet by acquiring more fuel efficient Toyota Prius Hybrid taxis. The Prius hybrid taxi is known for its fuel efficiency, low carbon emission as well as safety and comfort features which provide passengers with more comfortable, smoother and quieter rides.

We also introduced Double Deckers to our bus fleet. Aside from their increased capacity, the integrated design of the body and chassis of the environmentally‑friendly buses makes them lighter in weight. This leads to improved fuel efficiency, less harmful emissions, reduction in the usage of raw materials and tyres that last longer. Also, 85% of the materials used in manufacturing the buses are recyclable.


Conserving Energy

SMRT’s Energy Committee has played a significant role in sustaining our environment and cultivating ‘green’ values. In 2014, the Energy Committee rolled out a series of energy saving initiatives such as upgrading the propulsion system of our first generation trains to the more energy efficient Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Motor as well as introducing more energy efficient chillers at our stations. Additional energy saving initiatives will be implemented over the next five years to achieve a 10% reduction in energy consumption and carbon footprint.

In accordance with the Energy Conservation Act, we have appointed energy managers in SMRT. Yearly reports on energy consumption and production, as well as greenhouse gas emission are submitted to the authorities. Energy managers are also members of SMRT’s Energy Committee.

Moving forward, the Energy Committee will be restructured and expanded to include other environmental sustainability aspects such as air, water and waste management. In conjunction with these, there will be efforts to educate and raise awareness within the organisation as well as externally.

SMRT Environmental Sustainability Events 

SMRT’s inaugural SMRT Green Forum, and Green Workshops were held on 22 November 2016, with a combined attendance of more than 500 staff and invited guests. These were organised by SMRT’s Environmental Sustainability Committee, and driven by Community Engagement and Corporate Social Responsibility team. This Green Forum saw environmentalist and industry leaders come together to share and discuss best practices individuals and companies can adopt.

Speakers for the Green Forum included Dalsun Chung, Director for Sustainability of National Environment Agency, Ashokan Ramakrishnan, Founder and CEO of iWow Technology, Lawrence Wu, Director of Sunseap Group, Masayo Hada, Deputy Senior Manager of Ricoh Asia Pacific and Vincent Tan, Chairman of SMRT Environmental Sustainability Committee.
