President Halimah Yacob Launches Annual Scout Job Week

Chief Scout, President Halimah Yacob, will be launching the Annual Scout Job Week on 1 September, 11:00am at Woodlands MRT Station on the Thomson-East Coast Line. Job Week aims to inculcate in Scouts the dignity of labour, value of honest work and offers Scouts the opportunity to help others in return for donations. Through the values learnt from working for their keep, the experience will help Scouts build character to become active citizens and play constructive roles in society.

As the first Job Week after a two year hiatus, the focus for this year’s Job Week is to pay tribute to essential workers who kept Singapore going throughout the pandemic. Our Scouts will shadow staff at the station, such as station/ assistant station managers, service ambassadors and cleaners as they go about their duties. They will even have opportunity to interact with the security officers to understand how they help keep the stations safe. Through this experience, we hope that our Scouts can better appreciate the many important roles these frontline workers play to keep Singapore moving.

“I am pleased to launch the annual Scout Job Week this morning. The Job Week is a longstanding tradition to help our Scouts appreciate the value of hard work. Today’s event is made even more meaningful as our Scouts would be working alongside our transport frontliners who played an important role in ensuring safe commuting during the pandemic. I hope Singaporeans would encourage our Scouts and give them meaningful tasks to undertake, as they go around Singapore seeking opportunities to raise funds,” said President Halimah Yacob.

"Through Job Week, our Scouts will learn about the value of hard work, which is crucial for their development into active citizens of Singapore. We hope that our residents will support our Scouts by giving them a job such as cleaning up the corridor, sorting out recyclables or even helping to pick up food from the nearby coffeeshop," said Desmond Chong, Chief Commissioner, The Singapore Scout Association.

“SMRT is happy to support the Singapore Scout Association in their Job Week initiative, to foster a sense of empathy and appreciation of the hard work that frontliners provide in the course of their daily duties. Our frontliners are keen to share their training and SMRT's WeCare service spirit with the young scouts, so they can help others well and better serve the community,” said Lam Sheau Kai, President, SMRT Trains.

This year’s Job Week will take place between 1st – 13th September with some 10,000 Scouts aged 8 to 18 years old approaching communities islandwide to offer help in exchange for donations. The collected donations will be used to support the holistic development of our youth members through Scout programmes and activities.
