Early Closure of MRT stations along East-West Line in October 2018

1. Seven MRT stations from Tiong Bahru to Clementi MRT stations on the East-West Line (EWL) will close earlier at around 11.00pm on Fridays and Saturdays in October 2018 for ongoing maintenance, enhancements and asset renewal works. Starting from October, works to renew the power supply system on the EWL will also commence, along with ongoing works to install noise barriers along the railway tracks. The affected EWL sector and Early Closure dates are as follows:

2. The early closure of MRT stations from Tiong Bahru to Clementi MRT stations will give the engineers from the Land Transport Authority and SMRT, along with the project contractors, more engineering hours to renew and upgrade the EWL power supply system safely.

3. The power supply system renewal project will start with the laying of new power control and fibre optic cables along the tracks, sector by sector. Renewing the power supply system involves the replacement of nearly 1,300km of power cables, 250km of fibre optic cables and over 170 sub-stations. Real-time condition monitoring systems will be introduced to monitor the health of power equipment and identify potential faults, to improve train service reliability. 4. To maintain connectivity for commuters during the early closures in October 2018, Shuttle Bus Service 1 will ply between Jurong East and Outram Park MRT stations, stopping at designated bus stops near the affected stations to pick-up and drop-off passengers.

5. Commuters are advised to cater for additional travelling time when travelling between MRT stations using the shuttle bus service.

6. As the timing of the last trains departing each station on affected days will vary, commuters are advised to check for station-specific timings on SMRT Trains’ website and social media platforms when planning their journeys on affected dates. More information on train service timings during the planned closures of MRT stations in October 2018 can be found in the Appendices attached.
