Decarbonisation in Action

SMRT recognises the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and have made conscious efforts such as infrastructure rejuvenation, harnessing renewable energy to power our operations, adopting operational efficiencies and fleet electrification.

In partnership with Hitachi Rail GTS Singapore, we are working on the “Next-Generation Green Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) Project"  for our North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL). This project analyses train movement and energy usage profiles to recommend improvements in timetables and train operations, enabling more efficient use of traction energy.

Phase 1 of the project has delivered around 17 GWh in annual energy savings, enough to power over 3,800 four-room HDB flats. Implementation of the Green CBTC system has progressed, with Phase 2 achieving approximately 10% energy savings on the NSEWL through optimising train coasting points using advanced digital tools. This was enabled through ATS software enhancements and the deactivation of the Service Recovery function, allowing the Automatic Train Regulation system to adopt a more energy-efficient train running profile with reduced acceleration. The overall project is set to achieve up to a 15% reduction in traction energy, enabling greener, more sustainable operations on the NSEWL.

We are replacing approximately 60,000 lighting fixtures across CCL stations and train depots with energy-efficient LED systems. Commencing in January 2026, the initiative is expected to save 12.7 million kWh of energy, equivalent to the electricity consumption of nearly 3,000 4-room HDB flats. The longer-lasting LEDs will also reduce maintenance needs and enhance lighting performance.

Since 2016, SMRT has progressively installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across its network. We are expanding solar generation across our premises to support cleaner operations. Solar installations across SMRT facilities now provide approximately 9.4 MWp of capacity, with further installations planned where feasible. We are also exploring longer-term renewable energy procurement, including potential green energy imports via the RTS Link.

We are accelerating the transition to cleaner mobility across our transport operations. With over 200 electric buses deployed at Gali Batu Bus Depot and approximately 300 electric taxis and 30 electric limousines in our fleet, we continue to reduce reliance on internal combustion engines. Through driver training, real-time monitoring and enhanced EV charging infrastructure, we are also improving operational efficiency and supporting our driver-partners in the transition to greener mobility.

As our fleets, systems and energy sources evolve, we are strengthening workforce readiness by equipping our people with the skills needed to operate, maintain and work safely with new technologies. This includes specialised training for technicians working with electric vehicles. In partnership with Republic Polytechnic, we also support the National EV Specialist Safety (NESS) Certification Course, which builds practical capabilities in high-voltage safety, electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics.
