Decarbonisation in Action

SMRT recognises the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and have made conscious efforts such as infrastructure rejuvenation, harnessing renewable energy to power our operations, adopting operational efficiencies and fleet electrification.

We've rolled out initiatives to reduce our energy consumption and ramp up our solar power generation in both our transport network and offices.

A unique solution is the Intelligent Facilities Management (IFM), or what we call Green Station, which uses artificial intelligence to predictively adjust the settings of our station air-con systems, making them more efficient. That means less chance of over-cooling and slashing our air-con energy use.

Since 2016, we have progressively installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Bishan, Tuas West, and Mandai Depots, and TEL stations. We also collaborated with the Land Transport Authority to install solar panels at existing MRT stations in our network.

When the PV project is completed, SMRT’s total solar generation capacity will nearly double to power more than 2,300 four-room HDB flats.

The Gali Batu Bus Terminal also features a rooftop equipped with solar panels.

Almost half of our trains’ electricity usage comes from traction energy consumption. Leveraging energy-saving technologies and optimising train schedules, we can reduce traction energy consumption.

In partnership with Hitachi Rail GTS Singapore, we working on the “Next-Generation Green Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) Project"  for our North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL). This will reduce the traction energy consumption of Singapore’s oldest MRT line through analysis of the NSEWL’s train movement and energy usage profiles system.

The system will also provide recommendations for changes to train timetables and train movement profiles, to optimise conserving traction energy. The new project is set to achieve a reduction of 15% of traction energy and create greener operations on the NSEWL.

As part of the SG Green Plan 2030 targets, electric buses will make up half of the public bus fleet, with the remaining to be replaced by cleaner energy alternatives come 2040. We're teaming up with the Land Transport Authority to ensure a smooth transition, focusing on both electrifying our bus fleet and the infrastructure to support it.

To tackle harmful exhaust emissions, we've switched 90% of our buses to fuel that meets the latest European Union standards (Euro 5 or higher).

SMRT is also leading the charge in greener taxis as the first company with a 100% hybrid fleet. We have over 300 electric taxis cruising the streets, and we're working to fully electrify our vehicles in the coming years. Plus, we're giving drivers incentives to switch to EVs, through schemes like free rental and unlimited charging for the first 30 days.
