Singapore's daily commutes are undergoing a transformation toward sustainability and enrichment through the innovative collaboration between the National Library Board (NLB) and SMRT Corporation, known as "Nodes."
Launch of Nodes for Enhanced Commutes and Learning
On September 12, 2023, Mr. Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment and the Ministry of Transport, launched the first two Nodes at SMRT's Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub and Woodlands MRT station (North-South Line). These are just the beginning, as Nodes will soon be introduced at three more MRT train stations and two additional bus interchanges across Singapore.
At these Nodes, commuters will find QR codes that grant them easy access to NLB's extensive collection of e-resources, including e-magazines and e-books. This accessibility aims to elevate ordinary daily commutes into sustainable and enriching experiences, aligning with the broader goals of promoting responsible and fulfilling journeys.
Sustainable Commuting
Nodes are set to inspire eco-friendly travel habits. By granting commuters easy access to NLB's e-resources, including e-magazines and e-books, NLB and SMRT are encouraging public transport use over private vehicles. This not only reduces traffic congestion but also contributes to Singapore's sustainability goals by cutting carbon emissions.
Utilising Existing Infrastructure
Nodes maximise the use of Singapore's existing transportation infrastructure. Rather than building new facilities, SMRT and NLB leverage the extensive public transportation network to create knowledge hubs, and resources while, aligning with sustainability objectives.
The Nodes can be found at the following SMRT train stations and bus interchanges:
Reaching Out to Local Communities
In addition to our commitment to environmental sustainability and fostering a sense of responsibility for our shared spaces within our local communities, the carefully curated content at Nodes is designed to cater to commuters of all ages and backgrounds, aligning with the unique demographics and interests of the locality surrounding each Nodes station. With the rich array of e-resources available at the train station platforms and bus interchanges, this ensures that educational resources are within reach for everyone. This commitment exemplifies SMRT's dedication to transforming public transport spaces into vibrant hubs for community activities that contribute to the overall wellbeing of our communities.
“This partnership with NLB is in line with SMRT's vision of Moving People, Enhancing Lifestyles. We are glad to provide our commuters with enriching experiences like reading and learning opportunities simply by scanning a QR code. Through the introduction of this placemaking initiative, we aim to provide quality public transport spaces for everyone."
