Launch of Safety Culture 3.0

"We harnessed technology and data, particularly useful leading indicators, to address process gaps and track our progress … To bolster commuter safety, we fully deployed iSAFE at BPLRT, utilising Artificial Intelligence and Video Analytics to detect track intrusions since July 2023." - SMRT Chairman Seah Moon Ming.

We had launched Safety Culture 3.0 which was centred on enhancing safety ownership across all levels.  Using the Swiss cheese model, we would focus on the 'Second Last Man' — these are staff who are directly involved in the work processes to ensure the safety of their colleagues. It was part of our relentless journey towards 'Vision Zero Accident @SMRT' emphasising our commitment to safety as a personal and collective responsibility.  Other steps to enhance safety at our workplace:

  • Refining Safety Standards, Compliance and Enforcement: For ground execution so that all staff know their roles, responsibility and accountability
  • Gemba walks: Focus on key safety areas for staff understanding and adherence to safety protocols; utilise Gemba Walk checklists for compliance to requirements
  • Situational awareness: Staff should be aware and educated of potential workplace hazards in their workplace

The launch event was attended by our SMRT staff as well as Chairman and Guest-of-Honour Seah Moon Ming, Board Member and Chairman of the Board Safety, Security & Health Committee (BSSHC) William Tan, Board Member Yap Kim Wah, Board Member Quek Gim Pew and Group CEO Hoon Ping Ngien, along with guests from Ministry of Transport, Singapore, Land Transport Authority (LTA) Singapore and NTWU.
